Is Breathwork Safe? Understanding Safety, the Nervous System, and Why You Are Always in Control

If you're considering trying breathwork for the first time, it's completely normal to wonder: "Is breathwork safe?" .....Simply put, yes - we all breathe. Breathwork is the intentional manipulation of the breath.
Like yoga, exercise, or meditation, breathwork exists on a spectrum. Some breathing techniques are incredibly gentle and calming, while others are intentionally more activating and can create profound physical, emotional, and psychological experiences.
When practiced with awareness, education, and a skilled facilitator, activating breathwork can be an incredibly powerful tool for healing and self-discovery.
The key is understanding that you are always in control of your own experience.
Not All Breathwork Is the Same
There are many different styles of breathwork, each created with a different intention.
Some practices are designed to quiet the mind and relax the body. Others increase energy, emotional awareness, and access to deeper layers of the subconscious.
At 7 Stones Yoga & Wellness, I mainly facilitate immersive 9D Breathwork journeys that combine intentional, activating breathing with carefully designed soundscapes and guided experiences to help support emotional release, nervous system awareness, and personal transformation.
Every journey is unique because every nervous system is unique.
There is no "right" way to experience breathwork.
Understanding Your Nervous System
One of the first things we discuss before beginning a journey is how your nervous system works.
Our bodies are constantly gathering information about whether we're safe or under threat. Chronic stress, trauma, and everyday life can leave our nervous systems operating in a constant state of protection without us even realizing it.
Breathwork gives us an opportunity to become aware of those patterns.
Rather than forcing change, we begin learning how to notice what our body is communicating and respond with curiosity instead of judgment.
That awareness is often where healing begins.
Meet Your "Home Breath"
One of the foundations of every session I facilitate is something I call the home breath.
Before we ever begin the activating breathing pattern, you'll learn a gentle nasal breathing technique that serves as your anchor throughout the experience.
Think of it as your nervous system's home base.
At any point during the session, you are welcome to return to your home breath.
If emotions become intense…
If physical sensations feel overwhelming…
If you simply need a moment to slow down…
Your home breath is always available.
There is no expectation that you continue the activating breath at all costs.
In fact, listening to your body is one of the most important parts of the practice.
You Are Always in Control
One of the biggest misconceptions about activating breathwork is that participants are expected to "push through" whatever arises.
That isn't how I facilitate.
Healing doesn't come from forcing yourself beyond your limits.
It comes from developing a relationship with your body built on trust.
Throughout every session, I remind participants that they always have choices.
You can:
Slow your breathing.
Return to your home breath.
Rest.
Observe.
Rejoin the breathing pattern whenever you feel ready.
There is no pressure to have a dramatic experience.
There is no prize for breathing the hardest.
Sometimes the deepest healing comes from honoring exactly where you are.
Who Should Use Extra Caution?
While many people can safely participate in breathwork, activating breathing techniques aren't appropriate for everyone.
Pregnancy is considered a contraindication for activating breathwork.
Individuals living with significant cardiovascular, respiratory, or psychiatric conditions should speak with their healthcare provider and may be better served by gentler breathing practices rather than activating techniques.
If you ever have questions about whether breathwork is appropriate for you, I encourage you to reach out before attending a session. I'm always happy to have that conversation.
What You May Experience
Every experience is different.
Some people feel deeply relaxed.
Some laugh.
Some cry.
Others simply experience a quiet sense of peace they've been missing for a long time.
You may notice:
Tingling sensations
Changes in body temperature
Emotional release
Greater mental clarity
Deep relaxation
Feelings of gratitude, connection, or joy
Whatever arises, there is no expectation that your experience should look like anyone else's.
Your body knows what it's ready for.
A Different Philosophy of Healing
One of the reasons I fell in love with breathwork is because it taught me something I believe deeply:
Healing isn't something we force.
It's something we allow.
My role as a facilitator isn't to push you toward a breakthrough or create the biggest emotional release possible.
My role is to create a safe, compassionate container where your nervous system has permission to explore, soften, and reconnect at its own pace.
Every person who walks into a session brings a different story, different experiences, and different needs.
That's why I believe the most powerful healing happens when we replace pressure with presence.
My Perspective
Most people don't need someone to fix them.
They need someone to remind them that their body already carries an incredible amount of wisdom.
When we slow down enough to listen, the breath often becomes a bridge back to ourselves.
That's why I don't believe healing should feel like something being done to you.
I believe healing happens with you.
Every breathwork journey I facilitate is an invitation—not a demand.
An invitation to explore.
An invitation to trust your body.
An invitation to remember that you are capable of finding your way back to yourself, one breath at a time.
Ready to Experience Breathwork?
Reading about breathwork can spark curiosity, but experiencing it is something entirely different.
Whether you're looking to reduce stress, reconnect with yourself, or simply discover what's possible through intentional breathing, I'd be honored to support you on that journey.
If you have questions before attending your first session, don't hesitate to reach out. Sometimes the first step isn't booking a class—it's simply starting a conversation.
